George W. Jackson, Jr., 98, of Rock Hill, SC, formerly of Mt. Gretna, PA, passed away Thursday, July 6, 2023 at Westminster Towers, Rock Hill. He was the husband of Esther E. Miller Jackson. George was born in Philadelphia, PA on September 19, 1924, son of the late George W. and Ethel Morrett Dissinger Jackson.
George was a graduate of Lebanon High School and Lebanon Business College. He was a Marine Corps Veteran of WWII serving with 4th Division in the Pacific Theater, the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima also of the Korean War serving as a Sergeant with 2nd Division. While in the Marines, he graduated from The Platoon Leaders School, Quantico, VA and the Administrative Leadership Course, Washington DC. George’s work history is, Finance Department, Ft. Indiantown Gap Military Reservation. Lebanon Valley National Bank, Yardmaster and Supervisor of Traffic, Cornwall Railroad, was Field Representative for Congressman John C. Kunkel for 4 years, Administrative Assistant for Congressman Edwin D. Eshelman for 10 years, Administrative Assistant for Congressman Robert S. Walker for 4 years and then was elected in 1980 to the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives serving for 10 years.
George was a 50 year member of Lebanon Mt. Olivet Lodge #704 F&AM, Harrisburg Consistory, 50 year member and past Grand Tall Cedar of Tall Cedars of Lebanon and served as a Past Supreme Forest Officer. He was active with the Lebanon Salvation Army Advisory Board and was a past chairman, was Chairman for 12 years of Operation Santa and was Finance Chairman of Salvation Army Building Fund; Marine Corps League, Lebanon; American Legion Post 559, Annville; VFW Post 23, Lebanon as a life member; Military Order of the Cootie, Lebanon; American Association of Retired Persons, member of Rotary Club of Southern Lebanon County and former member of Rotary Club of Lebanon and had been named a Paull Harris Fellow; Board Directors of the Cancer Society; Board of Directors United Cerebral Palsy; 50 year member of Travelers Protective Association; life member of Senior Center of Lebanon Valley; 50 year member of the former Quentin Riding Club; Mt. Gretna Volunteer Fire Company; served as Republican County Chairman for 8 years; Republican Committeeman for Mt. Gretna Borough; member Lebanon County Republican Finance Committee; former Chairman of the Young Republicans of Lebanon County; Friendship Fire Company and Hershey Italian Club. He was a member of Quentin United Church of Christ where he had been a member of the consistory and Grace United Church of Christ where he was an Elder, as a member of the Pastoral Relations Committee and consistory.
In 1983 he received the Better Life Award from the Pennsylvania Health Care Association; in 1981 received the Distinguished Service Award from the DAV; in 1990 the American Family Institution at Valley Forge Award of Honor and the Alumnus of the Year from Lebanon Senior High School.
In addition to his wife Esther, George, will be missed by his daughter Beth Renee, wife of William K. Lifsey, III of Rock Hill, SC; his grandchildren, David M. Lifsey, Claire R. Lifsey, Kevin W. Lifsey and his great grandchildren, Maleah Lifsey, Evan Jackson and Ethan Lifsey.
